Nanomedicine has two meanings. It is the title of a multi-volume work by Robert Freitas on the application of molecular manufacturing to medicine, and has become identified with extremely advanced technology like cell-scale surgical robots, complex free-floating pharmaceutical robots, rapid prototyping of research tools, etc.

Recently the word has been used to describe medical applications of nanoscale technology. Dendrimers, fullerenes, and nanoparticles can be used for imaging, drug delivery, and local heating of tumors. Also, improved sensors can make diagnosis much cheaper and faster.
