Nanoparticles are often more reactive than larger particles of the same substance. There are two reasons for this. First, nanoparticles are simply smaller: they have more surface area in proportion to their mass. The second reason is that the surfaces of nanoparticles are often strained. Straining chemical bonds tends to make them more reactive.
