Talk:Nano Dove Organization
From Wise Nano
Nix on "livingry"
- I'm a big fan of the Nano-Dove concept, but attaching a silly, made-up word like 'livingry' to it will weaken its prospects considerably.
- It is not wise to position the Nano-Dove concept as opposed to all weapons, which is what the juxtaposition of livingry with weaponry appears to do. Just as there may be appropriate uses of surveillance in a post-MM world, it's likely that there also will be appropriate uses of weapons. The need for policing of some sort almost certainly will still exist.
- Based on the previous argument (#2), I am inclined to rewrite the page and remove 'livingry'. Unless someone can make a strong argument why I should not, that is what I will do.
Not opposed to all weapons
- I didn't mean to imply that the Dove should be opposed to each and every weapon. If a weapon reduces livability or poses a major risk, then the Dove would probably try to counter it. But the Dove is not pacifist. Feel free to rewrite to make that more clear.
- Can anyone come up with a better name than "Nano-Dove"? It feels clumsy and dorky to me.
- Sure, get rid of "livingry"--but keep the concept.

"livingry" , "dove" terms
I actually really like the term, "livingry" and it results in 709 hits on Google. Qualifying "livingry" as the opposite of "weaponry" (as Chris as done) gives something of a defintion. I don't know too many people who think of Bucky Fuller as a wacko, but then most people seem not to have heard of him. So, while I don't think the term is silly, it's not well known. Another concern - although the answer may be under my nose, I can't seem to find an antonym for weaponry.
Plowshares?
Which leads me to the "dove" in Nano-dove. Dove is quite a loaded term. The saying of it outside the context of ornithology brings up its opposite, "hawk." We don't want to automatically be generating resistance at the very speaking of the name of the organization. But the idea of plowshares (see "beating weapons into..."), while suggestive of the opposite of weapons, doesn't automatically create a gut response against. And then again, we are talking about sharing technology. So a coined term along the lines of plowshares, NanoShare, NanoStake, Stakeholder Nano, Nanoshareholders, MM Sustain, Public Nano Holdings..., something like that might be the ticket.
And the Common Nanotech Heritage Foundation does not have a bad ring to it either.
